What is a mother agency, and do you need one?
The agency that develops you and places you abroad, how it differs from other agencies, and what to ask before you agree to anything.

You may see the term mother agency as you research. It sounds more mysterious than it is.
The idea
A mother agency is the agency that discovers or develops you and manages your career. It typically helps you build your portfolio, decides where to send you, and places you with other agencies in other cities or countries. Those other agencies handle your bookings locally.
Why it matters
Your mother agency is usually your first and most important relationship in the industry. It is the one that speaks for you when you work in other markets, so its advice and its terms shape a lot of your early career.
Do you need one?
Not always. If you only want to work in your home city, a local agency may be all you need. If you want to work in several cities or countries, a mother agency that places models abroad is common. Some people also sign directly with agencies in other markets.
What to ask
- How do you earn money, and what is your commission?
- Which agencies do you place your models with, and how do you choose?
- What costs may be advanced, and how are they repaid?
- How long is the contract, and what happens if we want to end it?
- Can I take the contract home and read it before I decide?
