Modeling is not one job. Different clients look for different qualities. Knowing the main directions helps you build the right photos and approach the right agencies.
Commercial
Warm, approachable, expression-led work for everyday brands and products. It covers a wide range of looks and ages, and it is often the most accessible place to start.
Editorial
Story-driven work for magazines and creative projects, usually more stylised than commercial. It builds your reputation and your images, though it often pays less.
Fashion and runway
Work for designers and fashion brands, including shows. Requirements here are often more specific, so check what each agency's own site says rather than trusting general claims.
E-commerce
Clean, consistent product photography for online shops. Reliability, clear posing and a consistent look matter more than drama. It is steady work for many models.
Fitness and specialist
Sports, fitness and other specialist categories where a particular skill or physique is part of the brief. Some people also do parts modeling, where the focus is on one part of the body, such as hands.
How to choose where to start
- 01Look at the work of models you like and note which direction it belongs to.
- 02Check the agencies in your area and see which boards they list, such as women, men, new faces or talent.
- 03Build clean digitals first. They work for every direction.
- 04Pick one primary direction and one secondary, and let your first portfolio lean toward them.
You do not have to decide forever. Most people adjust their direction as they get feedback. The Model Potential Quiz gives you a starting point.
