Modeling scam warning signs, and how to check an agency

Most people who approach modeling are honest and hopeful, and a small number of businesses take advantage of that. The warning signs are consistent. Learn them once and you can check anyone in a few minutes.

Warning signs

• They ask for money first. Fees to register, to be considered, to attend a casting or to sign are the clearest signal.
• They require you to use their photographer, studio or course. A real agency may recommend a photographer, but it does not make signing depend on buying from them.
• They contact you out of nowhere and are extremely enthusiastic, without asking to see any photos first. Genuine scouts look at your photos before they say anything.
• They guarantee work, income or success. Nobody in this industry can promise that.
• They pressure you to decide today, to keep it secret, or to skip reading the contract.
• They ask for nude or semi-nude photos, or intimate photos of any kind, before a proper meeting or a signed contract.
• They communicate only by private message, and have no website, address or clear team.

How to check an agency

1. 01Find its own website and read the Apply or Become a Model page. Legitimate agencies explain how to submit and are clear about requirements.
2. 02Look for a real address, a contact person and a list of the models it represents, with work you can see.
3. 03Search the agency name with words like reviews or complaints, and read more than one source.
4. 04Check whether it has a history of working with known clients or is listed as a member of a trade or industry body in its country.
5. 05Ask questions before you sign: how does it earn its money, what are the commission and any costs, and can you have the contract to read at home?

Meeting safely

Meet in a public place or at a proper office, and bring someone with you or tell someone where you are. Do not travel far or sign anything on the first meeting. You should always be able to go home and think.
